Tao Po Filipino Doorbell
My Story, My Roots, My Why
Welcome to the very first episode of my personal podcast journey! I’m Sherwin – Filipino-American, web developer, father, craft beer enthusiast, and (formerly) a hardcore sneakerhead. In this episode titled “Tao” (a nod to a traditional Filipino phrase), I open up about my roots, my upbringing, and why I finally decided to hit record on this podcast.
This isn’t just about tech or parenting or culture—it’s all of that and more. It’s about being human (tao), reconnecting with my Filipino heritage, and finding a creative outlet to decompress from the daily grind. Whether you’re a fellow developer, a sneaker lover, or just curious about life through a cultural lens—you’re welcome here.
A special shout out to Gerald Grant for hooking me up with the intro (Element) and outro (Salvation) beats.

hey everyone this is sherwin and this is my podcast it’s the first episode and we’re gonna call it taupo and this is my first podcast by myself so i’m a little nervous um but anyway i just want to share a little bit about myself i’m filipino i was born in manila my parents migrated to america and pretty much left me with my grandma my aunts and uncles then they came back for me a few years later with a little brother that i first met when i was like seven so it was a little weird um growing up all those years and all of a sudden like hey you got a little brother anyway so um we went to chicago from philippines they’ve already been living there and i’ve been a bulls fan ever since and it’s been tough these past few years as a bulls fan so fast forward into the future um i’m a developer or a programmer um all those terms like so many terms being used coder developer programmer but pretty much i got a degree in computer information system and i am a web developer um and i’m not gonna say where i work at anyway um i’m a father i got kids and it’s awesome and i’ll probably be talking about that as well so i’m gonna be talking about that as well so i’m gonna be talking about it’s been a really good experience uh it’s not always fun but um it’s it’s a learning experience that i’d love to share as well and i love beer uh maybe that’s too harsh i love beer i i enjoy beer especially craft beers my go-to breweries um is stone brewing company ballast point and hanger 24 but i usually try all sorts of different things and finally what else would i like to share uh i’m a sneaker head so a lot of my friends know that i buy a lot of shoes well i used to i guess i’m retired i’m a retired sneaker head um and but i’ve been collecting since 1993 so and i’d say i retired i guess around um so but i mean i still buy shoes but not as much as i did before so now it’s like if i see some really comfy shoes um i’ll i’ll get some but not as much as before i usually go for like those um nike free runs if you guys haven’t tried those out man they are just soft it’s like cloth it’s like wearing socks it’s really comfy and light um but yeah i don’t i don’t buy as much anymore but i do have um i don’t have a lot of shoes i don’t have a lot of shoes i don’t have a i’d say i’d have a reasonable collection um and so maybe one of these days i’ll share those as well so enough about myself it sounds like uh i’m recording for a dating show or something um but i just want to get that out of the way just to introduce myself and just share something about me so you’re probably wondering um why am i starting a podcast well i’ve always wanted to start one um actually this is not my first podcast um i did a podcast uh with a good friend of mine mario rodriguez and we did one together last year 2016 um it’s called code hops radio you could find it at codehops.com it’s pretty much a podcast about web development um we just share our experiences throughout you know different projects and stuff and right now we’re on a little break um we were on a holiday break but and ended up being longer than expected so but um hopefully we’ll be doing some more episodes uh for that podcast show so but for now i’m just gonna um do this in the meantime and hopefully you enjoy the show and hopefully i can get some people on the show and uh do some more interesting things so what is this about um that’s a good question let’s see so to many that know me i just like to talk i just like to have conversations i like to learn about different things and i like sharing i like to take uh opportunity to just know about people and just know about different things and i just like to share experiences so i like to tell stories as uh some of my friends know so i figured um i i’m gonna just do it in a podcast so another reason or what this podcast is about is um i figured you know i’m on the internet a lot and i consume a lot of content online you know videos and other podcasts and stuff and i felt like you know i should not just consume things and i want to start producing things like i want to start contributing back to the internet not just um sit back and watch or listen so i just want to contribute and hopefully other people will watch or listen to me so um another reason why i started this thing is um well i’m pretty busy with my schedule and i have a pretty horrible work commute and it takes a lot off of me like it’s just so stressful and i’m hoping that recording a podcast would be a way to just relax and you know um stress relief i guess i don’t know i mean i have i have kids and they’re great at helping me with that um they’re awesome but there’s times that they add on to it so i’m just trying to find another outlet i guess and hopefully this this would do the job so yeah let’s see what else is there um so i’m hoping to have guests on as i mentioned before um and i’ve already contacted a few people they’re just old friends um so this is really like a just a personal podcast nothing like professional or anything um but uh i just want to share stories and just share information and so hopefully i can get a couple other people on here and just have fun with it and um just gives me a reason to talk to old friends and hopefully that’s not the only reason why i’m talking to them but um yeah i just want to have fun with this and hopefully um provide some information nothing too serious so and finally um i want to use this podcast um to share about my filipino culture so i’ve been in america for a long time um and sometimes i lose touch and forget so maybe it’s also a way for me to remember and keep my roots and at the same time um also share with people um so you know so i’m going to try every episode to have something related to my filipino culture um so whether it be like the main topic or just something that i’ll mention in the episode like for instance in this episode the title is taupo so i i picked this title or this phrase or word um because i think it’s uh it’s good for a first episode so it’s kind of like an introduction or something so taupo is a tagalog phrase um so it’s two words tau po so tau is t-a-o and then po p-o so if you have um heard tagalog before which is the language um one of the main languages in philippines um po you’ll probably hear a lot po or ho so but anyway let’s let’s take that first word so tau tao or tau t-a-o it means like person and then po is like um it’s like a a sign of respect not a sign of this just to show respect when you’re talking to someone it’s kind of like a sir or ma’am so if you’re talking to an an older person you normally would use that word po p-o or ho h-o not ho ho so um yeah so you normally incorporate that uh during your sentence or whatever so what is what is it tau po mean so it’s pretty much like saying is is somebody there or is there a person there it’s usually used when you are knocking on the door like let’s say you’re visiting a friend or visiting somebody and you knock on the door and you just say tau po um or like let’s say they have a gate and you can’t really go to the door um so you’ll just yell you’ll just yell tau po you know and and so if somebody hears you or that’s like a uh i guess a signal to those who are in the house or whatever like oh someone someone’s at the door or someone’s at the gate let’s go check out who it is or whatever it’s kind of like um a filipino doorbell how’s that that’s that’s what that is because we don’t have uh doorbells in philippines at least many of the homes over there don’t have doorbells um you know if you have a doorbell then you’re doing you know you’re doing a pretty good job with your life you could afford a doorbell but anyway um so yeah i i guess that that would be a uh a good um analogy of what tau po is it’s the filipino doorbell um so yeah that’s that’s my little share about uh philippines is that word tau po and um yeah so i would encourage you to use that if you’re gonna visit a filipino household or you know um just share it and uh yeah so i think that’s gonna wrap it up um i don’t know how long my episode should last but um this is just uh the first episode and just want to do a brief introduction of myself and um that’s that’s really it i have a couple of other um episodes planned out and i’m getting in touch with people and um we’re gonna go from there so so a couple things i’d like to plug and i’m pretty much w1n78 throughout the internet uh you see me on um twitter instagram if you use the untapped app for beer drinking i’m there as well i’m also on youtube although i haven’t produced any videos i think in like a year or two but i have a pretty good amount of videos there um i don’t even remember how many but they’re mostly like uh reviews and tutorials about um technology and stuff so but yeah um you could also check out uh my blog it’s blog.sherwinm.com and um podcast.sherwinm.com is where my podcast is going to be um and just check that out for any
of the show notes and stuff so that’s about it and i’ll see you in the next one bye bye hopefully i’ll catch you all on the next episode and uh drop me a line if you have any feedback or anything so thanks for listening you
