Anong Balita What's New?
Back After a Year + We Bought a House!
I’m Back! Catching Up After a Year Off
Welcome back to the Sherwin M Podcast! Wow, it has been a minute – actually, over a year! Looking back, Episode 14 dropped in October 2017, and here we are near the end of October 2018. Time flies!
I thought about doing a specific topic, but decided this episode would just be a catch-up, sharing what’s been going on during the long break.
What Does “Anong Balita?” Mean?
So, I’m calling this Episode 15: Anong Balita?
- Anong / Ano: What
- Balita: News
It literally translates to “What’s the news?” but it’s a very common Filipino greeting, basically our way of saying, “What’s up?” or “What’s been going on?”. When cousins or friends call, that’s often how we start the conversation. So, Anong Balita with me?
The Biggest News: We Bought Our First House!
The main reason for the long hiatus and the biggest update is… my wife and I bought our first home! We became homeowners a few months ago (prior to this recording).
It feels amazing, and honestly, a bit unbelievable. We bought a brand new build after months of searching, saving like crazy (picking up extra projects), researching the home-buying process, and talking to friends who’d already done it. It was definitely an adventure, scary at times, but we finally pulled the trigger.
I’m actually recording this from our new house, in our much bigger bedroom! Most of the past year was focused on saving and then the whole process of finding and buying the place. I’m incredibly happy and proud. Even paying the mortgage feels good right now!
I’m looking forward to sharing more homeowner stories in future episodes – like the joy (and frustration!) of telling the kids, “Go to your room!” or “Clean your room!” now that they actually have their own rooms. Although, my oldest (panganay) still likes sneaking into our bed in the middle of the night. My wife says we should enjoy it while he still thinks we’re cool!
Listener Mailbag: Shout Outs to Errol & Arthur!
Even during the break, I heard from some of you, which was awesome!
- Errol: She messaged me on Facebook a few months back asking about new episodes. I explained I’d just been super busy with life (mostly the house stuff!). She mentioned enjoying the podcast, especially Episode 8 (Kain Tayo Part 2), and appreciated hearing about shared experiences. Thanks so much for reaching out, Errol! Sorry for the delay, but here’s a new episode!
- Arthur: He also messaged via the Facebook page, saying he likes the episodes and how I explain Filipino culture and phrases. Thank you, Arthur! I really do try my best to explain things based on my own experiences, and I love hearing that it connects with listeners.
Feedback like this is fantastic, so please keep it coming via Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, wherever!
Quick Hello to Ronnie
Also, a quick shout-out to my friend Ronnie – glad you’re back in the state, man. Hopefully, we can chill soon!
Recording Again from the New Digs!
It feels great to be recording again, especially from the new house. Finding the time has been the biggest challenge, but I’m happy to be back behind the mic.
Wrapping Up This Update & Looking Ahead
So that’s the balita from my end! Just a quick update episode to let you know I’m still here and share the big news. I have plans for another episode soon, so stay tuned for that.
Thanks so much for listening, especially to those who reached out during the break. I’ll see you all on the internet!

welcome to the sherwin m podcast a podcast about the adventures of being filipino-american i’m your host sherwin wow uh it’s been over a year i’m looking at my little notes here and i dropped episode 14 on october 7th 2017 and it is now almost november 2018 it’s towards the end of october as i’m recording this so uh wow time flies um this episode i’m not really gonna talk about anything in particular i was thinking of maybe just doing this episode um just to talk about what’s been going on i’m gonna call this anong balita and maybe i might do a mini series on this topic but before i move forward let me try to explain what anong means so anong balita is um anong or ano is what and then balita is news like the news you see on tv or just news right so it’s a common phrase that uh people use just to say what’s up i guess right so whenever like i um call my cousins or my cousins call me you know it’s like oh anong balita you know like what’s up that’s that’s usually the phrase that uh we say it’s kind of like how are you but more of like hey what’s up so that’s the i guess the translation to it so that’s what i just want to share in this episode so what’s been going on it’s been a year a lot of stuff has happened and i just want to share uh with you all i don’t know if i’m gonna do a mini series like this is part one and then you know maybe a few months later uh we’ll do like a part two because usually i take some time in the beginning of each episode just to share what’s been going on and then i go to a topic but i think uh i want to dedicate the entire episode this episode to just share what’s been going on um if anyone’s interested so anong balita well the first thing i want to share is we are uh homeowners uh i i can’t believe it it’s amazing um yeah my wife and i bought our first home a few months ago and it was scary but um i think it was time finally and um just very happy to be able to purchase a home a brand new home at that it a few months ago we we bought it um took some time we looked around and finally found a place we like and um just did it bought it um you know we’ve been saving up uh for quite some time and uh pulled the trigger and i’m actually recording this episode it at the new house uh in the in our bedroom like it’s a really nice bedroom it’s pretty big compared to where we were and i just i’m just happy i’m very happy i’m very proud like oh my goodness i can’t believe it so uh pretty much most of the year that that’s what we or that’s what i did i focused on was just um save save save picked up a couple of projects here and there to continue to save and then uh we went house hunting you know for a few months and um researched the the process of owning a home um you know i i browsed the internet talked to friends who already own homes and like so it was it was a very interesting experience an adventure for sure and i think it’s a very interesting experience and i think it’s a very interesting experience for sure um and i’m glad to say that we we own we’re homeowners our very first home so yeah uh that’s that’s the big news really uh have lots of stories to share um in the next couple of episodes uh sharing how it’s like to be a homeowner um how how great it feels to tell your kids go to your room you know because they actually have their own room now you know um or clean up your room i mean you know it’s it’s a little frustrating that you always have to tell them that but but you know like as i think about it um wow they have their own room really cool um but my oldest still likes to wake up in the middle of the night and come come to our room and and sleep here and i’m like you’re leaving your little brother a alone in his room in your room to sleep with us here but um yeah so my wife’s like well just just let him sleep here because as he gets old we’re not gonna be as cool anymore so we’re gonna be like why don’t you spend more time with us now i better enjoy it so okay fine you know so um so yeah um we have a new home what else uh i want to give you a little bit of information give a shout out to errol she um sent me a message on facebook and a few months ago and was wondering you know like hey how come you haven’t recorded any episodes and um you know i was just telling her that i’ve been busy you know just busy busy i mean busy is good because it makes the time go by and um yeah but just yeah busy with life um but she she um sent me a message and was just sharing with me how she listens to the podcast and um she was saying that her favorite episode was the kain tayo part two and how um she just enjoys listening to the different experiences that i share and um but that’s it um i i did tell her i was gonna release an episode i think back in july but man just time is just uh really hard to find so um but here here’s a new episode hopefully you all enjoy it um but special shout out to errol for um sending me some feedback feedback’s awesome um so if you guys have any feedback please just send me some messages either on facebook twitter or instagram wherever i’m pretty much everywhere online so another special shout out to arthur he sent me a message on the facebook page i’m sure when i’m podcasting and um he just told me that he um likes the episodes and he enjoys me explaining the culture and phrases uh i do my best to try to explain it based on how i experience it so there’s there’s a lot to share and i’m i really love the feedback so but um i think that’s pretty much it this is you know uh use the phrase like if you go and talk to friends that you haven’t talked to in a while or even if you talk to them on a weekly basis you know your cousins and family be like i don’t believe that and they’re gonna be like oh hey you know um what’s been going on uh this this this this this so um but yeah i’m i had i wish i could show you the big smile on my face i’m recording once again uh found a little bit of time and i’m actually doing it uh here in the new house in the new room and i’m just enjoying enjoying it uh even after we started paying our mortgage i still enjoy being a homeowner um but yes thank you to errol and arthur and the others who have um sent me some feedback shout out to my friend ronnie he’s back in the same state hopefully we get to chill um what else i don’t know what else uh i have a plan for an episode uh soon so catch that one um hopefully i can get it out soon but this is episode what is this episode 15 we’re gonna call it an umbalita it’s just a quick episode just wanted to share with you all what i’ve been doing and that’s pretty much it thank you for listening and i’ll see you all on the internet you you you
