Filipino Time
Excuses, Stereotypes & Being Late
Feedback, Updates & Corrections
Hey everyone, it’s Sherwin, back with Episode 5 of the podcast, which we’re calling “Filipino Time”.
Before we jump in, some quick follow-ups:
- Ronnie: Shout out to my friend Ronnie who now texts me “Tao po?” before starting a text conversation to see if I’m available. Cracks me up, but hey, it makes sense! Thanks for listening, man.
- Ep 4 Typo: Embarrassing confession time! On the social media image for Episode 4 (“Mano Po: Put Some Respek On It”), I managed to misspell the already misspelled word “respect.” I typed “resek” instead of “respek” (which was referencing the Birdman interview where he demanded “respek”). As a developer who types fast (60-80 wpm!), typos happen, but misspelling a misspelling? Oof. Anyway, the title is fixed in your podcast apps!
- Target Story: Abby got approached at Target by a guy asking if she was Filipino and if she knew where the “milk for avocados” was. He meant condensed milk for the classic Filipino avocado dessert (mashed avocado, ice, condensed milk - use Carnation brand!). I don’t like avocados myself, but it’s a popular treat. I’ll try to find a recipe link for the show notes.
- Allergy Update: Apologies if my voice sounds a bit off. Spring allergies hit me hard last week, so I’m congested and sniffling. Recording was delayed, and editing might take longer. Thanks for your understanding!
Let’s Talk About Time (Daylight Saving Edition)
This leads into our topic. March 12th (2017, when this was recorded) marked the start of Daylight Saving Time. Fun fact I learned researching this: it’s “Saving,” not “Savings”! Mind blown.
- History: Benjamin Franklin proposed a version in 1784 to save candle usage in Paris by waking people earlier. Later proponents aimed to reduce evening electricity use.
- Who Observes It: It’s mostly used away from the equator where sunrise times vary significantly. Asia and Africa generally don’t observe it, including the Philippines.
- Impact: This means the time difference between here (Pacific Time) and the Philippines shifts between 15 and 16 hours depending on the time of year. Gotta be careful when calling relatives! Abby sometimes wakes her mom up at 5 AM PH time. Sorry, Mom!
- Frustration: Anyone else hate manually changing clocks on appliances, cars, and those hard-to-reach wall clocks twice a year? My old car even had the old DST dates hardcoded!
Introducing “Filipino Time”
All this talk about time brings me to the main topic: Filipino Time. If you’re Filipino, you probably know exactly what this means. If not, it’s essentially a cultural stereotype (and often, a reality) describing the tendency for Filipinos to be non-punctual or fashionably late.
Key Tagalog Time Vocabulary
Before diving deeper, some relevant Tagalog words:
- Oras: Time (similar to Spanish hora)
- Anong oras na?: What time is it?
- Umaga: Morning
- Tanghali: Afternoon
- Gabi: Evening / Night
Why Am I (Sometimes) Late? My Excuses…
So, why does “Filipino Time” exist? I’ll keep it real and share my own experiences and excuses:
- Traffic: The universal excuse! Even though I generally know how long routes take, unpredictable traffic still happens and makes a convenient scapegoat.
- Getting Distracted: I get distracted easily while getting ready. The TV catches my eye, a good song comes on the radio (gotta sing along!), phone notifications pop up (Facebook scroll hole!), emails need immediate replies… minutes vanish quickly!
- Underestimating Time Needed: “Yeah, 30 minutes is enough!” Famous last words. Even with my super short haircut (specifically chosen to save time!), getting myself ready, plus getting two young kids ready and cooperating? Time multiplies. Using my kids as an excuse? Maybe sometimes!
- It’s a Filipino Event: This is a big one. If you’re going to a Filipino party or gathering, showing up “on time” often means you’ll be the first one there… by a long shot. There’s an unspoken understanding that everyone will likely be operating on Filipino Time.
- Feeling Weird Being On Time: Honestly? Sometimes arriving exactly on time for casual Filipino events just feels… awkward. Like other latecomers are judging you for being punctual! It’s a strange cultural quirk.
(Quick advice for non-Filipino listeners attending Filipino events: expect “Filipino Time,” and always eat when offered food – it’s considered disrespectful not to!)
The Birthday Party Time Warp Story
We once threw a birthday party for my oldest son (panganay) at John’s Incredible Pizza. We had a room reserved from 12 PM to 2 PM. Knowing most guests were Filipino, we put 11:25 AM on the invitation, hoping that even with a 30-minute delay, people would arrive around the actual 12 PM start time.
The result? Our non-Filipino friends arrived promptly at 11:25 AM and had to wait almost 20 minutes for us (we arrived at 11:45!). I felt terrible and apologized profusely, explaining Filipino Time. They laughed it off, thankfully. And yes, some Filipino guests still arrived after 12:30 PM!
Philippine Airlines: Plane Always Late?
Another example often cited is Philippine Airlines (PAL). It’s infamously nicknamed “Plane Always Late.” While many airlines have delays, PAL had such a reputation for it that we’ve started flying other airlines more recently when traveling to the Philippines.
Wrapping Up Filipino Time
So that’s my take on Filipino Time. It’s frustrating when it affects you, yet many of us (myself included) perpetuate it. It’s a complex cultural phenomenon tied to social expectations, priorities, and maybe just a more relaxed view of schedules sometimes.

hi everyone it’s sherwin and this is the sherwin m podcast episode five we’re gonna call this one filipino time uh let’s go with the feedback first and i just want to give a shout out to my friend ronnie um he he texts his tech texts me now he texts me uh now um every every time he wants to just you know say what’s up he’ll he’ll text me waits for me to respond and then he’s like hey how’s it going man you know blah blah blah so so shout out to you ronnie i appreciate uh you listening and um i was thinking about it and cracks me up because it it does make sense i mean you know you’re trying to you’re checking to see if i’m available to text back so yeah so yeah good looking out man thanks for listening um so a couple of updates um i posted an image regarding episode four on like social media and stuff like um instagram and twitter and i think facebook and um i didn’t realize it till i think maybe the following day or so so episode four um the title was like um you know put put some respect on it and i misspelled well risk respect is already misspelled and i screwed it up and even misspelled it more so i put resk peck um i have a tendency to like screw up typing because i type fast so as i shared before i’m a i’m a developer i’m a programmer so i’m always on the keyboard and um i i’d say i type reasonably fast i don’t know i think like 60 to 80 words a minute so i don’t know if that’s considered fast still but um yeah um i just i guess didn’t realize i misspelled the misspelled word and screwed it up so it’s supposed to be risk back r-e-s-p-e-k i fixed it on your um podcast app or whatever it should it should be updated um but yeah i screwed that up but anyway i got that title from um the rapper producer entrepreneur entrepreneur um birdman um during an interview he just kept saying uh respect my name or something like that so it’s pretty funny um you could google it or whatever uh like tmz has a video of it i thought it was pretty funny i just wanted to use it as reference but i screwed that up on some image that i posted on on the internet um by misspelling an already misspelled word but yeah good job thank you so next update abby and i were at target and um so i was in a different aisle and she was telling me that a guy up to her and asked uh like are you filipino and then she was like yeah and the guy asked um if she knew where the milk um was for the avocados and so she thought about it first and she’s like oh okay yeah yeah yeah so um what the guy was referring to was the um the condensed milk for avocados um so uh there’s like this this dessert right um that in philippines or filipinos enjoy i i don’t like avocados so a lot of people are going to be like what no i don’t like avocados um but you you like squish it you squish the avocado you put ice and then um you put like condensed milk and some other stuff and and you eat it you just eat it like that you know i’ll find a recipe and put it on the show notes um but yeah but the important thing or one of the important things uh with this recipe um is you gotta use the carnation brand that’s that’s i mean for me even though i don’t eat it that’s that’s important um you gotta you gotta use the carnation brand condensed milk so look for that but yeah um next thing i don’t know if you’ve noticed i i’m a little uh under the weather or i don’t know if you hear the difference in my voice but i’m like probably have to do a lot more editing in this episode because i’m just clearing my throat often and sniffling so um that’s one of the reasons why uh i’ve i’m recording a little late than usual and probably releasing this um episode a lot more later because i’m going to have to probably do a lot more editing to clear some stuff up so forgive me and hope you understand um but yeah like spring started and last week late last week um allergies started and um yeah this weekend i got pretty messed up um nose is all congested and just yeah clearing my throat often and yeah but um seems like it’s clearing up um so i decided to just record anyway hopefully it’ll come out good or um hopefully it’ll it’ll meet uh your expectations if not uh apologies and um i’ll do better but thanks for listening um so um yeah that’s it and then one last thing on updates uh which will uh begin the episode leads me to the episode so march 12 uh 2017 was daylight saving time and it that’s when it begins and uh so i was looking this up and one of the cool things about starting a podcast is i i do some kind of research uh stuff that i don’t really look up but you know because i’m recording and i want to sound smart um i look stuff up and so uh it’s not daylight savings time it’s daylight saving time so i didn’t even know that mind blown you know so i’ve been saying it wrong all these years there is no s in saving except for the first s but there’s no savings it’s saving so yeah i looked it up in wikipedia i’ll share the links in the show notes um i just have a couple of notes that i want to share um so benjamin franklin proposed a some form of daylight time in 1784 like he had an essay called an economical project for uh diminishing the cost of light and he submitted it to the editor of the what is this journal of paris uh he suggests and somewhat jokingly that um people in paris or parisians um could economize economize economize candle usage by getting people out of bed earlier in the morning making use of the natural morning light instead so i guess that’s like um the earliest uh people have recorded of some kind of light and that’s what he suggested and he suggested of idea about daylight saving time another bullet point some early proponents of daylight saving time aim to reduce evening use of incandescent lighting this was a primary use of electricity once a primary use of electricity so daylight saving time is generally not observed near the equator where sunrise times do not vary enough to justify it so that kind of makes sense right some countries observe it only in some regions for example southern brazil observes it while equatorial brazil does not so that’s interesting because that’s brazil is a country and not all not the entire country um observe it only a minority of the world’s population uses daylight saving time to save electricity so daylight saving time is used to reduce incandescent lighting so daylight saving time is used to save electricity so daylight saving time is used to reduce incandescent lighting so daylight saving time is used to reduce incandescent lighting so daylight saving time is used to reduce incandescent lighting so daylight saving time is used to reduce incandescent lighting so daylight saving time is used to reduce incandescent lighting so daylight saving time is used to reduce incandescent lighting so daylight saving time is used to reduce incandescent lighting so daylight saving time is used to reduce incandescent lighting so daylight saving time is used to is daylight saving time because asia and africa generally do not observe it is daylight saving time because asia and africa generally do not observe it is daylight saving time because asia and africa generally do not observe it so that affects me anyway because so that affects me anyway because so that affects me anyway because philippines does not observe it philippines does not observe it philippines does not observe it and so um i’ve been asked by friends and and so um i’ve been asked by friends and and so um i’ve been asked by friends and relatives from the philippines about this relatives from the philippines about this relatives from the philippines about this when i mention it like when i mention like when i mention it like when i mention like when i mention it like when i mention like time change time change time change and um growing up in america it’s like and um growing up in america it’s like and um growing up in america it’s like you know it’s you’re already used to it you know it’s you’re already used to it you know it’s you’re already used to it but but but it’s hard to explain um and so it’s hard to explain um and so it’s hard to explain um and so depending on which time of the year the depending on which time of the year the depending on which time of the year the time difference could be 15 hours time difference could be 15 hours time difference could be 15 hours philippines could be 15 hours ahead or philippines could be 15 hours ahead or philippines could be 15 hours ahead or 16 hours ahead 16 hours ahead 16 hours ahead so sometimes you know gotta be mindful so sometimes you know gotta be mindful so sometimes you know gotta be mindful when uh when uh when uh like i call relatives or abby abby always like i call relatives or abby abby always like i call relatives or abby abby always calls her mom calls her mom calls her mom a specific time on the weekend um but a specific time on the weekend um but a specific time on the weekend um but it’s generally either it’s generally either it’s generally either 5 a.m or 6 a.m and over here it’s like 5 a.m or 6 a.m and over here it’s like 5 a.m or 6 a.m and over here it’s like after lunch like uh
after lunch like uh after lunch like uh two or three in the afternoon so um two or three in the afternoon so um two or three in the afternoon so um yeah depending on which time of the yeah depending on which time of the yeah depending on which time of the year year year we we sometimes wake her up at 5 a.m we we sometimes wake her up at 5 a.m we we sometimes wake her up at 5 a.m so sorry so sorry so sorry so yeah uh 15 or 16 hour time difference so yeah uh 15 or 16 hour time difference so yeah uh 15 or 16 hour time difference philippines is ahead philippines is ahead philippines is ahead at least in pacific time zone but yeah at least in pacific time zone but yeah at least in pacific time zone but yeah 15 or 16 hours 15 or 16 hours 15 or 16 hours from pacific standard time yeah from pacific standard time yeah from pacific standard time yeah okay and then so if you do check out okay and then so if you do check out that article in wikipedia that article in wikipedia that article in wikipedia there’s a section uh called public there’s a section uh called public there’s a section uh called public safety safety safety um there’s some pretty interesting um there’s some pretty go check that out i’m not gonna say so go check that out i’m not gonna say so go check that out i’m not gonna say too much about it but too much about it but too much about it but um yeah go check it out and so um yeah go check it out and so um yeah go check it out and so another thing i want to mention and another thing i want to mention and another thing i want to mention and probably the last thing i want to probably the last thing i want to probably the last thing i want to mention about the daylight saving time mention about the daylight saving time mention about the daylight saving time um it happens twice a year right so we um it happens twice a year right so we um it happens twice a year right so we lose an hour and we gain an hour lose an hour and we gain an hour lose an hour and you gotta you gotta you gotta you gotta start singing or attempt to dance you gotta start singing or attempt to dance or attempt to do both or attempt to do both or attempt to do both and next thing uh you know it’s like and next thing uh you know it’s like and next thing uh you know it’s like next next thing you know another song next next thing you know another song next next thing you know another song comes on you’re like man comes on you’re like man comes on you’re like man these songs are like three to five these songs are like three to five these songs are like three to five minutes each minutes each minutes each so time will go by so time will go by so time will go by quick um with that so quick um with that so quick um with that so you know another thing could be like um you know another thing could be like um you know another thing could be like um especially nowadays with technology especially nowadays with technology If my computer’s on and I’m getting ready and then I get a notification, whether it be like Facebook, you know, notification, Facebook notification, someone liked something and I’m like, oh, let’s see what they like, blah, blah, blah. Next thing you know, like you’re scrolling and scrolling and five minutes have passed and, you know, you wasted five minutes or an email comes in and you’re like, you can’t wait to reply.
So you end up replying. Next thing you know, three paragraphs in, you’re like, oh, man, this is a long email. So, yes, I get distracted very easily. So the next excuse, I guess it’s somewhat like the previous one is I just underestimate the time I need to get ready. You know, I’m like, yeah, 30 minutes is enough. Jump in the shower, go and change and go. Right.
So one of the reasons why I have short hair. And I’ve had short hair for quite some time now is I hated combing it. So I just I just, you know, I get a fade to on the top, one on the side. I’m good. Like I jump in the shower, dry up. I don’t need to comb my hair in my high school days.
You know, we had bangs like long bangs. So it took longer to get ready. But, you know, there was some point where I’m like, man, it just took too long to comb my hair. So I’m just going to cut everything. And we’re good. So but, yeah, I just underestimate the time it takes to get ready.
I guess a sub bullet or a sub excuse is because now I have kids, you know, I guess that’s one one of the good things of having kids. You could use them as an excuse. Right. So I’m going to use my kids as an excuse. So not only do I have to get ready, I have to get them ready.
And there’s times there. I’m not cooperating. So, you know, and I got two of them. So that’s multiplied by two. So, yeah, underestimating the time it would take to get ready.
So another excuse I have is the event that we’re attending is mostly with Filipinos. And, you know, you don’t want to be there on time because no one else is going to be there on time. So so. Yeah, I mean, I don’t know how else to to explain that excuse. I mean, come on. You don’t want to be the first one there because no one else is going to try to be there on time.
So and I don’t know about you, but if I do get somewhere on time, it feels weird to me. So I don’t know if that’s like being Filipino, like and being on time. It just it just feels weird. Again, I’m I’m just keeping it real and I’m sharing. I’m just sharing, you know, so, yeah, it feels weird.
I’m being honest here. It does feel weird being on time. I’m not saying every event, but, you know, like work, you got to be there on time, obviously. So but, you know, stuff like that. But it’s like those those weekend events, those parties, those gatherings, like those kind of events.
Yeah, it just feels weird if you’re there on time. And then it’s like people I feel like people as they come late, look at you like, man, look at look at you. You’re all you’re on time. You’re on time. You know, it just feels weird.
I don’t know. That’s some advice for non-Filipino listeners. If you go to a Filipino event, you got to eat. Doesn’t matter how much you have to eat. It’s it’s like disrespectful.
But but yeah. Yeah, it’s it’s it’s frustrating. It’s it’s like not only do I do it, but then it’s frustrating when someone like people do it to me when I have events. Right. So, yeah, it’s frustrating.
But it’s it’s it’s a Filipino thing. Right. Filipino time. So if my non-Filipino friends listening, if you invite me or other Filipinos, just just, you know, remember that if we are late, it should be an automatic excuse. Because we’re Filipino.
That’s it. So aside from that, I wanted to share a story about Filipino time. OK, so we had a we threw a birthday party for my panganay, my oldest kid. Right. And it was at John’s Incredible Pizza.
So it’s like Chuck E. Cheese or, you know, it’s like a it’s a restaurant for kids and well for family. And they serve pizza like buffet style. All you can eat pizza. And inside it, there’s like rides, rides and games like carnival type.
But, yeah, it’s really cool. And we reserve the the room. It’s like a two hour reservation or something from like, I think, 12 to two or something like that. Lunchtime to 2 p.m.
And so. Once to 2 p.m. Hits, they’ll kick you out of your reserve room and they’re not going to kick you out of the place. But they’ll they’ll ask you, like, hey, we got to clean up because the next party is going to come.
And so you all got to you know, you don’t have to leave, but you got to find somewhere else to hang out. And so so it’s important for your guests to show up. Otherwise, they’re going to, you know, miss out on the program or whatever, because they have like program set up during your time there. Like they’ll. They’ll.
They’ll sing and they’ll dance. They have mascots come out, blah, blah, blah, blah, you know. So it’s important for you and your guests to show up on time. That way you can take advantage of the full two hours. Well, we tried to be smart about these things and we already are aware of Filipino time and most of our guests are Filipino.
So in the invitation. So keep in mind, this is a 12 p.m. Event. It starts at 12 p.m.
In the invitation. I think we put down like it starts at eleven twenty five. Right. Thinking Filipino time kicks in. They should still be there on time before or right around 12, because Filipino time is roughly 30 minutes to an hour and a half, maybe two.
Who knows? But I don’t know what the statistics are, but so we figured eleven twenty five. You know, that’s thirty five minutes before. For the actual time. That should be plenty of time for, you know, the Filipino friends and family to even if they show up Filipino time, they’ll be there, you know, on time, I guess, quote unquote, on time.
So we we arrived at eleven forty five, you know, so 15 minutes before twelve. And man, so the the non Filipino guest that we invited were there. And they’ve been waiting for four, you know, at least 20 minutes because they’re on time. They don’t know about Filipino time. And I felt so bad.
I apologize to them. And, you know, as I explained what Filipino time was, then, you know, they they laughed and, you know, it was all good. But I totally forgot. But shout out to them. Thank you for being on time.
And sorry, you got what is that innocent bystander, you know, like, whoops, sorry. But but yeah, yeah. So that was that was that’s what was that’s what happened. And of course, there were still people who showed up like twelve thirty and beyond. But what can you do?
What can you do? Right. I mean, and so another story is regarding Philippine Airlines or PAL or PAL, PAL, P-A-L, Philippine Airlines, which is also known as Plane Always Late. P-A-L. Right.
They are notorious for this. So for those who flew, you know what I’m talking about. If you flew them before, they are they are hardly on time. And so I don’t know. I mean, maybe it’s just I mean, I’m pretty sure a lot of airlines don’t don’t fly on time.
I don’t know. I don’t fly any other airlines or I don’t fly other airlines as often. But more recently, we started switching airlines. If we need to fly to the Philippines. Philippines, because of this reason right here, it’s like it’s just they are just notorious for always being late.
And so so, yeah, so that that’s all I wanted to share about Filipino time. So, yeah, hopefully you’ve enjoyed this episode about Filipino time. And if you have any stories to share, please do. And yeah. And that’s it.
Hopefully I can brush off this allergy thing. And get better soon. So a couple of things I want to mention before I go. I’ve created a Facebook page, facebook.com slash Sherwin M podcast.
And I’m pretty much everywhere at W1 and 78. So that’s win 78. But it’s W1 and 78. All right. So hopefully you enjoyed the show.
Thank you very much. And I’ll see you all next time. Bye.
